The Xeno-Philes II: Condom diplomacy

Did the condoms arrive?

Pansy was dismayed that President Zuma asked the British to shower South Africa with a billion condoms for the world cup. With approximately 30m people above the age of 18, that would be a condom a day for 5 weeks for each of us. Now that's how you score.

He asked for a billion, they pledged 42 million, but did the condoms arrive? Transnet has been on strike for three weeks, with cargo being rerouted as far afield as South America.

It is true: Aids is a problem, but the president could have been a tad more discrete, rather than making it a prominent agenda item for his state visit. When Pansy applied for a German visa at the Pretoria embassy, she was told that she needed additional security clearance from Germany because most black people go to Europe for drug trafficking and prostitution. Pansy protested: Having studied in Deutschland and been on several holidays there for the last 6 years, the additional clearance is not actually a regulatory requirement. But the visa office was not to be dissuaded: South Africa + black = high risk.

Wunderbar! President Zuma's request certainly reinforces the notion of (black) Africa(ns) being primarily about sex, and the symbolism of his request undermines all the efforts of people like Pansy to be treated with respect and shrug off racial stereotypes.

No matter. Nkosi sikelel'ama diplomats. Our Pansy loves Germany and had a great holiday (as always). Germany is really a great country. She wasn't given any freebie condoms, and no-one suspected her of being a prostitute.

  1. Oh dear... Germany wants this clearance?! Mind you, on the other hand, this policy should be introduced for Germany - Far East: checking (all) white old men flying there...
