It's the difference.
This morning, one of Pansy's colleagues asked her excitedly, "Are you feeling it?!?!?!?"
"Nope," was the placid petal's perfunctory response.
A while later, Pansy made the mistake of "popping" to Cresta during her lunch break. On 11 June 2010. Four hours before the opening match.
B-A-D M-O-V-E.
Popping to Cresta meant ear drums popping from the vuvuzelas.
Pansy's not really "feeling it", but all the Bafana Bafana* fans made sure she felt it, *painfully*, in her ears. Apart from the impracticalities of trying to push a shopping trolly while your fingers are blocking your ears, it's hard to concentrate on your shopping with a cacophony going on in the background.
Other shoppers shared her sentiment. The one said,
"Look, I don't mean to be unpatriotic, but can't they just keep those trumpets for open spaces, not in a mall?"
Another said, "Well, I hope the lungs tire out after today..."
Judging from Bafana Bafana's fantastic performance today, the trumpeters will blow even harder next time.
So anyway, Pansy, cursing herself for not anticipating this retail-therapy-turned-retail-agony decided to abort her plans, and only go to Woollies for some thermal vests (Joburg is starting to get very cold) and then go back to work.
Heaven: Pansy doesn't know if it was due to natural selection or "manager's discretion" but there were no trumpets blowing in Woollies. What joy! What exceeding pleasure: The sacrosanctity of shopping restored. Our little petal skipped through the aisles, resisting the urge to hug everyone in sight. Yes, this is the difference: the invisible hand that guided us to this place, free of vuvus.
Some people in the store had vuvus, but they weren't blowing them. Yes, Pansy was feeling it: The Woolworths difference.
After a quick grocery shop and mentally noting what clothing would be bought at the next sale (hence the need for cacophony-free concentration), Pansy proceeded to the parking lot, reversed out of the parking bay, idled for five minutes, and promptly reversed back in again.
Trying to leave Cresta. On 11 June 2010. Three hours before the opening match.

Traffic out of the parking was at a complete standstill.
So Pansy decided to sample the Woolworths cafe. She usually only buys their cakes as a takeaway (the chocolate cake being her favourite), but this time it would be a first-time lunch from the buffet.
After initially feeling slightly unimpressed at the lack of vegetarian options (Pansy is 83% vegetarian) she had the rice, mixed veges, chilli beans and sweet potato with lemon zest. To end, a filter coffee.
The waitress was very attentive and the meal was delicious, especially the sweet potato. The buffet chef enthusiastically answered Pansy's questions on how the food was prepared. She prepared the food with love: that's the difference.
11 June 2010. Two hours before the opening match. Pansy stuck her head out of the mall to see if traffic was clear.
G-O-O-D M-O-V-E!!!!!
The roads were clear. After a heavenly shop and a meal fit for angels, she went back to work. She felt it, she tasted it: The Woolworths difference.
