"Are you seriously not watching soccer because of the vuvuzelas?"
One of Pansy's colleagues posed this question to our little petal, with a look of complete disbelief.
Yes, seriously, she was not watching soccer at public viewing places and pubs because of the vuvuzelas. Those vuvus drive Pansy I-N-S-A-N-E.
However, she has been listening to the matches on the radio. (Remember, dear reader, Pansy does not have a television).
One great thing about the radio commentary is the female football experts. Yes, this is Mzansi* after all. Empowerment and all that jazz. On paper - the constitution etc - South Africa is one of the most progressive countries when it comes to women's rights. However in reality, South Africa is heck of a sexist. The female experts are former Banyana Banyana** players - the South African women's football team. In 2008, a Banyana Banyana player was a victim of corrective rape - to "cure" her of her lesbianism - and subsequently murdered.
Female commentators is a good start, though. Next we should have female referees.
Some of the radio commentators are entertainment in themselves. Pansy's favourite is a guy that did the commentary for the Switzerland-Chile match. Switzerland and Chile - makes our petal think of chocolate and chilli - a very "in vogue" culinary combination, such as Madame Zingara's signature dish: fillet with chocolate chilli sauce.
But back to the commentary: This commentator kept exclaiming, "OH MAYI WEDDDD!" making it sound like there were major catastrophes occurring throughout the match. And then
instead of describing what was happening on the field he would go off on a tangent:
"To the leeeeeeeeeeft, I hevv Sawuth Ufrika...to the riiiiiiiiiiight, I hevv Sawuth Ufrika, the Sweeeeeeeeeeees, they are verri kwayett, but the Chil-OH MAYI WEDDDD! Hoooooow could he miss thett shot? Just heeeeeeem and the keepah. He shood hevv just sleeeeeped the boll into thee beck of thee nett. Olllllll he needed was komposjha. Komposjha, komposjha, komPOsjha!
Well, Pansy salutes the players for coping with the vuvus during this tournament, especially all the guys who managed to keep their "komposjha" and score goals nogal.
