BaGhana BaGhana° indeed.
Pansy is somewhat amused by the sudden display of afro-fraternity that Saffas* have shown towards the Ghanaian football team.
Nevermind the 2008 xenophobic attacks, the rumours of pending post-world cup xenophobic attacks and the otherwise blatantly xenophobic every-day attitude of Saffas towards foreign black africans or "kwerekweres" as we are better known.
A few months ago, a certain car hire company refused to let a Ghanaian national rent a car because of their "no kwerekwere" policy. Presumably he had a name like "Kingson", otherwise they wouldn't have made the reservation in the first place.
Worse still, this Ghanaian did not protest, he simply rented from another company.
Pansy wonders if this company's owners also got caught up in the BaGhana BaGhana frenzy.
Football fever is wonderful, but unfortunately mindsets don't change overnight, and they certainly don't change because of a game of football.
After 11 July it will be back to xenophobia as usual.
Or perhaps not?
In the interim, Pansy's new trick when a Saffa gives her a mean look for speaking English (and by implication causing crime and taking away jobs) is to smile and say, "I'm Ghanaian."
° Bafana Bafana is the nickname for the South African men's soccer team. Literally means "the lads". The Ghanaian team was referred to as BaGhana BaGhana when they were the only african team left in the world cup knockout round. Bafana Bafana made history by being the first host nation to be knocked out in the first round.
*slang for South African
