The Football-Files VI: Grease

So the Eskom strike was averted. For now.

Gosh, we wouldn't want to be on our worst behaviour when our soccer tourists are here. Although the French team had no qualms about being on their worst behaviour during the tournament. A bit like the Joburg BRT drivers that went on strike during a match, leaving thousands of spectators stranded at Soccer City.

South Africa and France have a lot in common. In Franschhoek everything is le "this" and la "that". In addition, both countries love rugby, produce excellent wine, and have an amazing propensity to go on strike.

When France hosted the 1998 world cup, they also had a series of strikes immediately preceding the world cup.

Strikes have become something of a culture in South Africa.

Except for artists. Artists never go on strike. So in their honour, Pansy went to watch Grease. Twice. It was absolutely superb and the band was top class. The cast energise and mesmerise.

If only the energy from the cast of "Greased Lightning" could be harnessed to operate our power stations then it wouldn't matter if Eskom went on strike.
