1. Cybersmart - Internet service provider: great service, great product. Their referral bonus a nice touch. I wish Cybersmart ran the government.
2. Alexander Forbes - Short-term insurance: Having tried Mutual and Federal, Santam and Momentum, I understand why Alexander Forbes is number 1 in the industry - entirely dependent on the broker although that also makes a big difference. I should have switched sooner.
3. Wendy Knowler's Consumerwatch column - She's the consumer's angel and the column is very informative. She lobbied for Woolworths to change their scan-right policy.
4. Anne Cox's Metrowatch Column - She's the ratepayer's angel.
5. Ebay - 3 cheers for small businesses.
6. Amazon.everywhere - Because pet stuff is a rip off in SA. Also loving the free supersaver delivery (but not liking the customs duties).
7. Paypal - Really easy to use and convenient, except for the exchange control blaa blaa that doesn't allow funds paid in to go on your credit card and funds transferred to other users and what-what...
8. Wicount - Recession? What recession. Loving the huge discounts on stuff.
9. Groupon - Ditto! Groupon is global, maybe it's in your country, too.
10. Eastern Temptations spice shop - Now Pansy can afford to switch to saffron and basmati
11. Toyota - She's always smiling after dealing with them! And the coffee and muffin is also nice.
12. SA Police Service - Everyone is telling me that the excellent service from the 10111 emergency call centre, the fingerprinting team at Joburg Central and the police station was a fluke. Fluke or not, SAPS was great.
13. Buy247 - for IT stuff.
14. Open Source Software - Pansy finally took the plunge and downloaded open office, drop box, vlc media player and adobe acrobat reader.
15. The movie 50-50 - some really great lines in that movie.
16. Verity Park, Parkhurst - a small, fenced park for dogs to play and socialise. Also has a skate board ramp and goal posts for soccer. It was recently (2008) rehabilitated as it had become run down. Dog owners, pick up the poo!!! (Some say that requires too many plastic bags. Recycled bag, maybe?)
17. Ster Kinekor - loving the art nouveau movies, operas and plays, and now broadway shows - woo!!! (except when the aircon is not working or when it's on freezing mode, but that's apparently the mall's fault...)
18. The US of A - discounts, discounts everywhere (including broadway)
"Umm, may I have a discount?"
"Yeah, shorr. Ha much ya want? Is forrtee perrsent aaff okay?"
Worst of 2011 - the primary headache givers (in random order)
1. Samsung cellphones. Nuff said.
2. Telkom fixed line services (the first year that I've had major problems with the phone. Thankfully, they fix the internet within a day or so and I'm liking the online fault logging. At least then I don't have to spend forever on hold listening to their music and getting aggro with the call centre agent when they try to tell me that the crossed line, dropped calls and lack of dialing tone might be my handset and not because of Telkom)
3. Home Affairs (they did some good stuff, but the bad stuff seriously cancels it all out)
4. Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing (I wish they would also be put under administration)
5. John Morrisson Panel Beaters - they fixed their mess up, eventually...
6. Edcon Financial Services - Autonomously signed me up 3 times for insurance that I didn't want!!! The third time, they gave me a R50 voucher to say sorry.
7. The Gautrain website. So un-userfriendly it's a-m-a-z-i-n-g.
